Which defensive spray is best for you?

I get so many phone calls from people asking if I carry pepper spray. And of course yes. I carry the Mace, Wildfire and Pepper brand shot between the three, it’s probably close to 30 different models. Everything from a half ounce of pepper shot to 330 grams of bear spray and a pound of fire-grip pistol, similar to the one “dog the bounty hunter” uses on a television.

Many people think that all pepper sprays are the same. They all do the same. When an assailant receives a pepper spray in the face, several things happen. First, it incapacitates you for between 5 and 45 minutes. It will cause severe pain in your eyes, nose, throat, and mouth. It could even be cursing you for several minutes.

The oleoresin pepper found in most sprays causes intense tearing to the point of closing the eyes. Defensive sprays also cause choking, shortness of breath, and a burning sensation on the skin, eyes, and throat. Some disorientation may occur.

Many people don’t realize that there are several basic pepper spray delivery systems; foam, spray and gel are the most popular. The new pepper gel holds up better in the wind outdoors and has a greater distance than most other sprays at 18 feet. The new Mace pepper spray uses a “bag in a can” technology that provides the longest throw distance of any pepper spray in the world at 25 feet.

But there are four different types of defensive sprays that you can choose from.

Triple Action: uses OC (oleoresin capsicum) that causes suffocation and closing of the eyes; tear gas to tear and disorientate and ultraviolet dye to mark the bad guys for the police to identify

Dual Action – Uses CS tear gas for profuse tearing, severe pain, and shortness of breath with UV dye.

Pepper Gel – Uses 1.4 percent capsaicinoid concentration in a UV gel and dye.

Peppergard uses OC spray which causes severe pain in the skin, eyes and throat.
