Will a Final Fantasy VI remake be any good?
With all the rumors this year about a possible Final Fantasy VI remake for the Nintendo DS, I thought I’d share my thoughts on it.
Final Fantasy VI is arguably one of the most popular in the series and if any of the titles compare to the legendary FFVII, it’s definitely VI. It’s a shame that many of the fans of the newer series haven’t given this game a try due to the old graphics. A remake of FFVI, if done right, could really help Square Enix with their fading fanbase.
The problem I have with a DS remake is the terribly childish style they’ve adopted with recent Final Fantasy remakes.
Personally, I don’t really like the Final Fantasy IV remake for DS. The characters look too cute, too childish, and some of them have had complete redesigns that look nothing like their original SNES sprites. FFIV is a great story with so many dark spots and this new version seems to lose all the excitement that the original game had.
Final Fantasy VI is much darker than IV. The World of Ruin section of the game, along with the music, feels so dark and intense that if they were to remake the game the same way they did FFIV, it would just take away all the meaning.
If we were looking at a remake of Final Fantasy VI, I think we’d all want to see it in a similar style to games 7-9. Square has gotten into a bad habit of being lazy with their remakes and the title We Value so much that they need to learn to either leave it alone or give the remake a much more deserved time allowance in their work schedule.
This is all my personal opinion. I’m sure some people enjoyed the remake of Final Fantasy IV, however I felt disconnected from the characters and couldn’t get over their childish design and this worries me that Square will go the same way with FFVI. In particular, the idea of them making a sprite for Terra with her blonde hair instead of the original green-haired sprite of hers terrifies me; it’s almost as if Square is afraid of having unusual and creative characters.
