Step-by-step analysis of week 5 of Drew Henson

Summary: More of the same from Drew. The game ended 17-28 187 yards 2TDs and 1 INT. He went on to show his great escape ability, as well as the strength and precision of his arm on whatever route works in the middle of the field. Keep struggling with long passes.

I wish I was on a more open offense where I could see him complete more difficult passes. The offense he plays in is mostly short back passes and tight ends. He’s looked good in this run-oriented offense, which shows me he could be a decent backup if Bledsoe went down, as long as you slow down the offense and run the ball a lot, which we would do anyway.

He looks good enough to give me renewed hope in him, but he definitely needs to work on his game. The mental aspect seems to be there, but he still needs to work on his mechanics and hold the ball too long. It also has a long way to go when it comes to consistent accuracy on certain launches.

1. Game-action 2 and 7 He threw a nice little pass to TE running a comeback. A little late in launch so a DB was able to take it down.

2. 3 and 7 Backtracked, no one opened. He could have run, but he didn’t. It stayed in your pocket too long. He received a hammer blow to the back by a DT and lost the ball. Recovered by Amsterdam. The ball should have been gone 3 seconds earlier. You can’t hold the ball that long and hope to get away with it.

3. 2 & 6 Rhein is now down 14-0 / Game Action. Screen to the corridor. Gain 10 yards to the left.

4. 2 and 6 WR hits in the middle for a 12-yard gain.

5. 2 & 5 Under pressure, beat the blitz and hit TE perfectly underneath for another 1st try.

6. 2 and 9 FB Hits below. Excellent run after catch for a 10-yard gain.

7. Perfect 2 and 6 float pass to WR over the top in the end zone for a touchdown. Beautiful passage, although not particularly difficult.

8. 1 & 10 Go under to FB for a 17-yard gain.

9. Snap 2 and 7 failed. He jumped on him for a 3-yard loss. He didn’t know whose fault it was.

10. Shotgun 3 and 10. Holds the ball forever. He finally fires a strike at a WR crossing about 25 yards downfield. Abandoned pass. He showed the strength of his arm. However, the downside of this pass is that it had a lower delivery. His arm dropped slightly, but it was mainly his legs that extended and lowered as he threw. Just like a baseball shortstop would.

11. 3 & 2 He leaned back, under great pressure. Hit WR on the floors. Bad place, below 1st down.

12. 2 and 5 He leaned back. Let it fly across the field. He threw it out of bounds.

13. 3 and 5 Under pressure, he threw the ball down the middle perfectly towards his WR while being hammered. Perfect pass and showed great arm strength. 15 yards of gain.

14. Screen 2 and 3 on the right. No profit.

15. Comes 1 & 10 Blitz, throws his back foot. Hit WR in the middle for 10 yards.

16. 2 & 11 Blitz, avoid one guy, but can’t pass the other. 8 yard loss.

17. 3 and 19 Pressed, he climbs into the pocket, but a boy catches him from behind.

18. 2 and 18 Under pressure, he hits TE sitting in the middle of the field. The drops pass.

19. 3 and 18 Avoid the rush, throw to the field. Nice shot, but the DB knocks him down. I was glad to see him throw a deep pass to the target because that has been his biggest weakness.

20. Game action 1 and 10, he moves, runs out of pocket to his right and hits approaching TE to gain 12 yards. Good precision in the race.

21. 1 & 10 Play-action, hit TE running a square, shot perfectly in his chest without breaking step.

22. 1 and 10 Rapid fall, inclination interrupted by CB

23. Shotgun 3 and 5, he fires it down in his big WR running down a slant, WR breaks some tackles and scores a TD.

24. Shotgun 3 and 13, avoid the rush. Throw the ball.

25. 1 and 15 Game action, avoid two runners. Find RB below. Good run after the catch for a 1st down.

26. 1 & 10 WR falls short, Henson misses it a lot outside.

27. 2 & 10 A long time, lets TE float by hitting a pole. DB interrupts the pass that was a little behind the receiver.

28. 3 and 10 Rollout to the right, no time to pitch. You have to throw it away.

29. 1 & 10 Nobody opens downfield, he goes to RB on the right planes. 8 yards of gain.

30. 2 and 2 Two minute warning. Another short pass to the FB. For a 1st down.

31. Shotgun 1 and 10, Throw down the sideline to WR who was well covered. WR should have caught the pass. Good shot.

32. 2 and 10 Fall back, throw downfield. The ball is too high, incomplete. Nobody really opens anyway.

33. 3 and 10 A long time. Lofts to WR. Pass interference on the CB.

34. Shots 1 and 10 to WR down the middle. The pass was high and behind the WR. Ball tipped up in midair, caught. The ball hit the ground, but was not repeated instantly.
