For the love of sumos!

Years ago there was a baseball player named Eddue Gaedek who gained immortal fame as the smallest player in major league history. Giving the number 1/8 on his back and weighing 65 pounds, measuring 3 feet 7 inches,

Gaedel was one of the hardest players to strike out in the majors. His unique strike zone measured around 1 1/2 inches, so unless the pitcher was throwing the ball like a laser, Gaedel was pretty much guaranteed to get on base. Some called this a mockery, others called it genius. In any case, Gaedel was an unstoppable weapon. Bringing little people back to baseball could be good for the sport if the sport was willing to change and adapt. Sure, some might argue that we could end up with an entirely small team with no strike zones, where every player walks and no one strikes out. However, the strike zone may need to be marked on a standard space instead of a space based on the player’s size and stance. This would certainly bring more consistency to referee calls making the game a bit better.

Let’s face it, in sports, size does matter. I’ve always liked smaller, faster players, whether it’s Barry Sanders or Martin St. Louis. Today, however, I am going to defend the opposite. Cheering on the greatest of all. Today, I am rooting for the often overlooked “Sumo”.

Hockey – Imagine if Scott Stevens crushed you in the corner. Granted, that’s scary, maybe even scary enough to make forwards afraid to step into the opposing teams’ zone. But now imagine a 400 pound sumo wrestler on roller skates smashing you into the corner! Scarier.

I think most forwards would be shooting from the blue line. Not to mention, if you could find a Sumo big enough to cover the entire net, no one would be able to score a goal!

You would immediately be the best goalie to ever play the game!

The next time your team is on a losing streak, ask yourself “Could a sumo help us?” The answer will most likely be “Yes” or a very funny picture of “No”.
