America’s Best Beaches of 2008

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, professor of environmental studies and well-known beach specialist, annually showcases the best of America’s beaches. Lush greens, pure sands and crystal clear waters make up America’s 10 Proud Beaches.

Caladesi Island State Park
Caladesi Island is located along the beautiful sandy beaches of Dunedin, Florida. It is known as the eternal jewel of the gulf due to its pristine natural beauty. There are many recreational activities available especially for nature lovers. Therefore, beach lovers can enjoy the beach, swimming, kayaking and sunbathing. The park has picnic pavilions, cafes, a gift shop, and a marina. The island is only accessible by ferry service or private boat.

Hanalei Bay, Hawaii
Hanalei Bay is located along the north shore of the island of Kauia. This is a two mile long sandy beach around a crystal bay. The backdrop of the bay is surrounded by lush mountain ranges. The western part has a quiet coastline. It’s a great place to throw frisbee or walk on the beach.

Siesta Beach is on the Beach Road of Sarasota, approximately 8 miles long. It has the finest powder-white sand in the world. The beach has received many awards and recognitions for its magical quality.

Cooper’s Beach, New York
Coopers Beach is located in the community of South Hampton on Long Island. The beach offers soft sand and panoramic views. It is called the playground of the rich during the summer. Residents of South Hampton offer free parking and other free fees. Some of the facilities include pavilions, restrooms, lifeguards, cafeterias, and outdoor equipment.

Coronado Beach, California
Coronado Beach is a family beach in San Diego. It is located on the ocean side of Coronado Island, which is south of the Naval Air Station and towards the Hotel Del Coronado. The beach offers plenty of wildlife and beach activities such as swimming, fishing, sailing, surfing, volleyball, and kite flying.

A trip of the migratory whales is one of the attractions that you should not miss in the months of January to March.

Main Beach, New York
Main Beach in East Hampton is located along the Atlantic coast of New York. It is a long, clean, golden beach with the best waves and sandbanks. Surfers love this beach.

Hamoa Beach, Hawaii
Hamoa Beach in Hana, West Maui is a 100 foot beach that has 30 feet of black lava sea cliffs. Surfing here is better due to the crescent shapes that the waves bring. This beach is one of the most popular beaches in Hawaii. Visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, body-surfing, and scuba diving.

Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, North Carolina
Cape Hatteras along the outer banks is a national seashore. It covers 70 miles from South Nags Head to Ocracoke Inlet. The sea shore offers many active recreational activities and quiet reflections. Visitors can go fishing, collect shells, and climb the lighthouse.

Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne
Cape Florida State Park is also known as the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area. It is 50 miles from the Bahamas and Bimini. This beach is home to the historic lighthouse built in 1825 as an aid to navigation. The place offers restaurants, beach parking, showers and toilets, as well as rented water and land vehicles.

Beachwalker Park, South Carolina
Beachwalker Park is located on the west end of Kiawah Island. It offers a fantastic ocean view, river view and eleven miles of protected palm and pine trees.
