Spring 2012 Fashion Trends in Jewelry

Spring is here: Time for rebirth, renewal… and new fashion trends in jewelry! So, what should be on the clothing list for this spring? Jewelry this season is all about bright colors, big and bold statement pieces, and gold, baby, gold. Here’s a rundown of the jewelry styles seen on runways and red carpets around the world.

Pastel colors are in, especially mint green. You probably already have a lot of pastel-colored clothes in your closet. That’s a good thing, because soft candy hues and sherbet hues are the flavorful colors this season. Mint green is going to be very popular, along with orange and tangerine. Choose a large bright pink or peach bracelet, oversized rectangular ring, or gemstone pendant necklace to pair with a matching top, bag, pair of jeans, or shoes.

Go crazy with mod. What was great is now great again. Retro 1960s-style jewelry is back, thanks in part to the return of AMC’s super-popular series Mad Men. If that’s your style, go for Art Deco, geometric shapes like triangle/chevron earrings or necklaces with circular or square pendants. The Banana Republic clothing company is on the train. They just launched a spring Mad Men inspired clothing and jewelry line with over 40 pieces for men and women, designed in collaboration with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant. Wonderful, honey, yes.

It’s time to dress up tribal. Have you ever gone on vacation and purchased an exotic piece of tribal jewelry? Good news: now is the time to use it. The bigger and flashier, the better. Think layered necklaces with beads, stones, crystals, and earrings with fringe or feathers (thanks again, Steven Tyler). Get really exotic by adding some carved wooden sticks to your hair. In fact, hair jewelry is back in a big way. Dust off those barrettes and hair ties, and if you’re feeling particularly frisky, wear a tiara or brooch for a night out.

Gold, honey, gold. For the last decade or so, silver jewelry has reigned supreme, at least among the young, but yellow gold is making a big comeback in 2012. Gold jewelry never goes out of style—it’s a timeless look that says class and elegance. Look for pieces in polished satin and shimmering hammered gold with patterns and textured woven finishes. To take your diamond ring to the next level, place it between two gold bands. And don’t forget about golden stones like beryl and rutilated quartz in a necklace, earrings or pendant.
