The Morco Water Heater

If you own a mobile home, your hot water will most likely be heated by a Morco water heater or Morco combination boiler.

The heater has been around for many years and has been installed in many mobile homes over the years due to the reliability of the heater.

But sad to say, most have never been repaired or maintained.

The heater is like the furnace in your home, it still needs maintenance to keep it in good, safe operating condition.

Even if you only use the mobile home a few weeks a year, it should still be checked annually for safety.

So what does this imply?

The first thing we do is a gas tightness test, this is to prove that there are no gas leaks before we start.

The flue must now be checked to ensure that the products of combustion are removed from the heater and do not spill into the room.

As these water heaters age they tend to rust so when checking the chimney we are looking for any form of corrosion.

Make sure that the flue pipe is well secured and does not move, checking that it is connected to the water heater correctly and sealed.

The most important part now is to check for correct ventilation, making sure the vent is clean and unobstructed.

The heater is classified as an open draft and as such the water heater needs oxygen to burn properly, there is not enough oxygen and the water heater will start leaking carbon monoxide into the room.

So keeping the wind clear is very important.

The pilot is checked to make sure it has a nice traveling blue flame with no yellow.

Once the casing of the water heater is removed, a visual inspection is performed, then the heater is cleaned and dead flies and insects are removed.

The burner is checked to make sure it is clean and undamaged.

Now check the heat exchanger to make sure there is no corrosion, then clean it well and make sure the products of combustion can get through.

Once the internal work is done, the casing is reassembled and the water heater is put into operation to check that the flame burns correctly.

It should be a sharp, strong blue flame, any yellow marks indicate the heater is not burning properly.

If you have the Morco water heater installed in your mobile home and you notice the flame is yellow, stop using the water immediately and call a gas safe LPG engineer to have it checked.

Once the service has been carried out, a visual inspection of the gas supply is carried out, checking that the gas supply pipe has an isolation valve installed.

Now we perform another gas tightness test and print the results.

If your Morco water heater begins to leak or you notice that the water is not as hot as it used to be, call your boiler engineer.

Depending on the age of your water heater, it may be cheaper in the long run to replace a newer model.

Chances are the heater is the same age as your mobile home, and if it hasn’t been taken care of, a newer model is the best option.
