Ideas for a garden fence design

The design of the garden fence is largely influenced by the choice of materials to be used. Wrought iron fences will suggest something more ornamental, while chain link fences tend to be more utilitarian. Each material has its own texture and aesthetics. We will be looking at a few different types of garden fence materials and designs.

Wood fencing includes hardwood and softwood, but sometimes the term “wood” can mean material that simply has the look and feel of wood, namely vinyl. Vinyl fencing should be seriously considered. While it’s a bit more expensive up front, its maintenance costs are negligible, as it won’t chip, fade, rot, or get bug infested. It has a similar appearance and grain pattern to wood, but does not need to be replaced.

There are two main types of wooden garden fences: palisades and picket fences. A palisade fence lacks space between the slats, as they are connected at the edges with tongue and groove joinery. This gives the garden a more exclusive look. Bamboo garden fencing is another type of privacy fencing. Bamboo is quite affordable, and it resists in a way that adds rather than detracts from the character of the wood. Homeowners less concerned with privacy often choose the more traditional, popular and classic white picket fence, which uses the space between the slats to allow a view of the garden from the other side.

Metal fences for gardens are usually made of aluminum or iron. The two materials are not mutually exclusive. Many fences that may appear to be wrought iron are actually made of aluminum that has been finished with a powder coat that provides additional rust and weather resistance, while being less expensive to install. Wrought iron fences are in high demand, but are often out of the owner’s budget; but steel or aluminum can be substituted in most cases.

The cheapest metal garden fence is the standard wire fence. While some people are hesitant to consider chain link fencing, since it can look sterile around something like a living garden, adding vines in and around the chain link can make them blend in quite nicely. There is almost always a clever garden fence design that can be used for even the most utilitarian fences.
